Planting Shrubs

Shrubs are used to create a beautiful and unique landscape. Whether used as a privacy barrier or a welcoming invitation along a walkway knowing which shrubs to choose and how to take care of them is the first step.

You will need:

  • Shrub of your choice
  • Gloves
  • Trowel and shovel
  • Soil and compost
  • Hose

We also used the following products in this how-to:

Clean the area where you will plant your shrub     Dig your hole
Step 1 - Clean the area where you will plant your shrub. Cut back any ground cover and push back any mulch that may be present.     Step 2  - Dig your hole roughly twice as large and twice as deep as the root ball.
Remove about one third of the soil     add Sta-Green fertilizer
Step 3 - Remove about one third of the soil from the hole and refill with a potting soil and compost or pete moss mixture. There should be enough of this mixture in the hole to allow the new plant to sit at the desired depth.     Step 4 - I like to add Sta-Green fertilizer to the bottom of the hole when planting my shrubs because of the slow release formula.
Place the shrub in the hole     Pack firmly
Step 5 - Pack the bottom of the hole firmly to prevent settling later on. Place the shrub in the hole and fill with remaining dirt mixture.     Step 6 - Pack firmly leaving the top two inches loose for simple water absorption. A slight depression around the plant will also help conserve water.
add Osmocote     Water thoroughly
Step 7 - I like to add Osmocote to give my shrubs a constant supply of nutrients that will help promote gorgeous blooms and lush foliage.     Step 8 - Turn your hose on very softly and lay it at the base of your shrub. Water thoroughly for about 10 minutes. This will help your shrubs adjust to their new environment.
